The Conscious Mind Empowerment Method
Turning Knowledge into Action
Knowledge is Only Half the Story
Have you ever found yourself knowing exactly what you need to do, but still not doing it?
Overthinking important decisions?
Avoiding difficult conversations?
Reacting in ways that do not reflect the person you want to be?
Finding that pressure changes how you think, feel and behave?
If any of these sound familiar, you're not alone.
The Conscious Mind Empowerment Method (CMEM) is a practical, evidence-informed approach to behavioural change, built around a simple idea: behavioural change has two phases — knowledge and action.
Developed by Behavioural Change Specialist James Wilson, CMEM helps people build the knowledge needed for change and put that knowledge into action.
The Knowledge Phase involves gaining clarity about the person you want to be, understanding the internal barriers to change, and developing the practical skills needed for change.
The Action Phase is about putting that knowledge into practice, especially in the moments when pressure, self-doubt or difficult emotions get in the way.
The Two-Minds Framework
CMEM provides a clear, practical method for behavioural change. It is built on the Two-Minds Framework, a conceptual model for understanding how the mind functions.
It helps people recognise the difference between the Rooted Mind (shaped by our upbringing, culture, genetics, evolution and trauma) and the Conscious Mind.
The Rooted Mind creates our learned, instinctive and protective responses. The Conscious Mind is where our wisdom, kindness, values, logic and courage reside.
The 3 Stages of CMEM
Identify the person you want to be and the direction you genuinely want your life, work or organisation to take. Develop CLEAR goals that reflect your values and remain actionable even when difficult thoughts or feelings are present.
1. Set CLEAR Goals
Recognise and understand how the unwanted thoughts, feelings and urges of the Rooted Mind, can influence the way you respond.
2. Understand Internal Barriers
Develop practical ways to enable your Conscious Mind to guide what happens next, helping you respond more intentionally and take meaningful, values-led action.
3. Apply the 4-Step Change Process
